HONORING PENNELL C. WOODARD (1934-2016)

There have been many community leaders among Mr. Pennell Woodard’s generation, but for the breadth and depth of his service, Penny stands head and shoulders above his peers. In 2010 he helped establish the Y’s charity golf tournament, which to date has raised over $200,000 for youth programs and scholarships.

Penny’s relationship with the YMCA began as a small child learning to swim. Later he would grow into an accomplished basketball player at the Y and become a four-letter athlete at Edward Little High School, and a Football All-American in 1954. He attended Florida State University as a football recruit before serving briefly in the United States Coast Guard.

Penny quickly established himself as a community leader upon his return to Auburn. In 1970 he helped establish the Y’s Biddy Basketball program, which is still teaching local youth the fundamentals of the game today. He served as Biddy Basketball director and chair of the Y’s Physical Education Committee until 1978. That same year Penny joined the Y Board of Directors, where he made substantial contributions not just to the YMCA but to the greater L-A community. He held several board leadership positions, including chair of the Y Board, where he advocated for youth development and the importance of youth sports.

Dedicating over 32 years to steering the Y’s charitable mission, few Y members are as decorated as Penny. He received the YMCA Distinguished Service Award in 1974 and 1985, was recognized as Volunteer of the Year in 2004 and was inducted into the YMCA Hall of Fame in 2016. For a lifetime spent mentoring and advocating for local youth at the YMCA and beyond, we are honored to host the Pennell Woodard Memorial Golf Tournament.
